Mat Does Horror & Poetry

Storytelling, Horror, and Poetry

An essay on my journey into poetry for The White Rabbit Poetry Society's Monday Poet

My name’s Mat, and I’m not a fucking poet. Or the “horror guy.” I’m a storyteller who uses whatever tool is necessary to make you feel something in that moment. Sometimes that tool is horror, occasionally it’s an essay. But there’s something about poetry that hits different. Poetry finds a way to make you stop and…

“Among the Thugs” Revisited: A Conversation with Bill Buford

Thirty-five years after his classic book on soccer hooligans, the former Granta editor speaks with the critic Leo Robson about the so-called “slum sport.”

This month, we’re rolling out a new web series, One Book, which is more or less what it sounds like—an interview with an author about the making of just one of their books, not because that book has just been published (it could be decades old) or is in the news (though we’d be thrilled if it was), but because it is…

I have become a football fan.

I have become a football fan. It wasn’t always like this and I wasn’t always so. Poem: Unmoored (A Ghazal)

Ghazal: A lyric poem of independent couplets linked by a repeated refrain and rhyme, traditionally exploring themes of love, longing, loss, or the unattainable.

Glass across the horizon, a mirror, untouched by my breath— You cut against water easily, with no current there. The heron cries, then spreads wings for flight A fleeting glance of blue in sky, how I wish I were there. Hands once warm, now cold beneath the chop Reach out again for what remains uncertain there. …

Poem: What the Mountains Keep

A pantoum is a poem made up of four-line stanzas that originated in traditional Malaysian poetry, with the repetition of lines in later stanzas to create an interwoven, echoing pattern.

The mountains keep the sounds of hope dying in their limbs— A last warm embrace before the chill of Hades welcomes us home Like safflowers wait in hulls, white with time And the silver strands I wrap around my fingers. A last warm embrace before the chill of Hades welcomes us home. …

15-Minute Poetry #1: I Wish You Were Mine

Wasted Blood

A Collection of Poems

The book contains an original essay not previously published, intentional illustrations by a human graphic designer, nine of Josh's poems, and all thirty-two Bloody Sonnets translations. The digital version is pay-what-you-want. The Bloody Sonnets are of significant cultural importance to Slovakia. Because of this, Josh believes that neither price nor physical distance should be a barrier for these historic poems for peace.

Poetry Prompts, Inquiries, and Rituals from Kansas

The Search for Rhythms: The Pursuit of Poetry in Everyday Life

An ekphrastic writing prompt inviting readers to spend time describing a childhood photo in detail, focusing on imagery rather than meaning. The prompt includes guidance on shifting point-of-view, finding titles, discovering unexpected similes and metaphors, rearranging sentences, and exploring contrasting imagery (light/shadow, spatial relationships) to reveal poetic meaning.

Rabbit Room Poetry

Poetry Prompts—July 2026

Three poetry prompts designed to inspire creative practice: Extended Metaphor (write a poem using repeated opening phrases or recast daily life as something else), "It's Not about the Monster" (write a poem where something talked about on the surface actually explores deeper meanings), and Translation (use a foreign-language poem as a creative springboard rather than translating it directly). Readers are invited to share their work in the comments.

Microfiction Workshops & More with Meg Pokrass

Prompt from "The Aria" by William Bronk (and an alternate prompt below)

Two writing prompts inspired by literary works. The first asks writers to create microfiction or prose poetry about a character or couple moving to or visiting a city filled with bad luck, where place acts as antagonist, ideally in first-person plural. The second prompt invites writers to write about a character or couple dreaming of an imaginary place (like Oz) where they can be themselves or find happiness, with optional prompt words provided.

Sunday Poem + Prompt

080: Poem + Prompt (Danika Stegeman)

Write a poem inspired by Danika Stegeman's constraint-based work. The prompt invites readers to adopt a rule (such as excluding a specific letter), write a poem under that constraint, then deliberately break the rule in revision. Participants are encouraged to mirror the structure of Stegeman's poem or another favorite poem, then disrupt it with their own voice. Results can be shared in the comments or on social media by tagging the host.
